Light up Stockholm

Drottninggatan

I still love the classic chandelier lights on Drottninggatan. Photo by Robert Corkery.

Stockholm wants to be the holiday destination in Europe. To that end, the city has invested in new light displays that are being put up all over town. I love holiday lights, so I’ve got no problem with that. But I gotta say, some of the decorations are kinda tacky. Others are just kind of dull, such as the big red balls on Biblioteksgatan.

Sergels Torg looks more like an American display to me! Photo courtesy of City i Samverkan.

One of the reasons I’ve always liked winter in Stockholm is that the decorations are understated – stars and candles in the windows and little white lights. It’s nothing at all like the American over-the-top light displays. That said, there are some very pretty displays around town. Plus, I’m always a fan of anything that adds a little light to Stockholm’s dark winter. By the way, the official turning on of the holiday lights is Sunday. You can find out more about the lights at Stockholm\’s jul.

In general, most holiday lighting is tacky. I do agree that Sweden in general has beautiful holiday lighting with all the stars and snowflakes. Nice photos Sandra!
