For most of the world, Swedish movies tend to be lumped into either the Bergman or porn categories. Or for those who are a bit more movie savvy, Lasse Hallström’s films might come to mind. But there is a lot more to check out. A few weeks ago – following the recommendation of my friend Roger – I saw a cool and quirky Swedish film from 2008. Let the Right One In (Låt den rätte komma in) is a combination of love story meets vampire horror film. And it’s surprisingly good.
I don’t think that I’ve ever seen a vampire movie like this that gave me a good scare without making me want to hide my eyes from all the gore. Instead, you get a good Hitchcock-style build-up to terror. And thanks to a solid story line where a young boy who is bullied meets the strange girl next door and falls in love, the movie is actually touching and well acted. As Let the Right One In was filmed in Blackeberg, a suburb of Stockholm, it also provides a frosty look into Sweden in winter.
Take a peek at the film’s trailer here: Swedish vampire. And then settle in for a good classic scare and a story that stays with you long after you’ve seen the film.
