Learning to speak Australian

March 11, 2010

in Australia

In front of the Criterion Hotel.

When I’m in Australia, I think I speak the same language. But I don’t. Long ago I realized that if there is a shorter or cuter way to say something here, that’s the way it will be said. So Robert is often called Robo. University is uni. The TV is the tellie, football is footie, a biscuit is a biccie and so on.

Yesterday, I had a lamington with tea. It’s a small sponge cake coated in chocolate and lightly dusted with coconut, served in a small square shape. For dinner, we had a barbie and ate rissoles and snags. Rissoles are hamburgers where the meat is spiced up with onions, breadcrumbs and some herbs  and snags are sausages.

As I am writing here at my Australian office that is better known as the Criterion Hotel, I should also define a few pub terms. When it’s my shout, I need to buy the beers for everyone. At the bar, a draft beer comes in either a schooner or a midi. If I am really thirsty, I get a schooner. In talking about it, I think I should get a schooner of Hahn now. It ‘s my shout.

Rissoles are also what IKEA in Sydney thinks Swedish meatballs are.

And remember, only poofters drink middies 🙂

Glad you’re having a great time.

We shorten things here too:
Medborgarplatsen is Medis
Lappkärrsberget is Lapis.
Another abover zero day and you can walk on the sidewalks with out watching every step.

Thanks Tom. And so true! Glad to hear the weather is getting warmer.

Thanks James. Robert always makes sure to drink schooners, except in Queensland where it’s too hot to get a schooner!

When I studied Swedish at Stockholm uni, there was an Australian in my class, Wayne. One day after class I suggested that we go fika, and Wayne said, “Come on, all, Sharon’s shouting!” I immediately covered up my mouth and was horrified – I didn’t think I was shouting! Turns out I wasn’t!

That’s a hilarious story Sharon. So shall we go to fika when I get back…?
