It’s the wet season, after all

mataranka thermal pool

Having a swim at "our" private pool at Mataranka Springs.

After a night of heavy rain, we hit the road again yesterday to the Nitmiluk Park in Katherine Gorge. When we stopped at Edith River for a swim at the gorgeous natural pool there, we found it was closed due to flooding and the threat of crocodiles. So all we could do was admire the view and then move on.

“It’s the wet season, so it’s wet,” has become our mantra on this trip. Yes, we were disappointed to not get to swim. But it was actually kind of cool to see the place in flood.

But before going to our next destination, we called first. We found out though the road to the Mataranka Thermal Pool had been closed, it had just reopened. Perfect!

The Mataranka thermal pool. When we got to the resort, there were only a few locals at the bar. But absolutely no one was at the pool. So we had this gorgeous spot ALL to ourselves. How amazing is that? And I have to say that it was heavenly to swim in the 34 degree c water. This was definitely not an experience we would have had without flooding. Just now I am feeling rather lucky about our wet season travels.

You are torturing me. Please at least tell me you got bug bites or something.

Antropologa, Ha! I do have a few bug bites and we do get torrential downpours if that helps. Average temperature: 30 degrees C!
