creek fording

Fording yet another flooded road, this time at Nourlangie.

We’ve been evacuated. Monday, we drove to Kakadu National Park and checked into the Gagudju Lodge at Cooinda for a few nights. We’d been to the lodge a few years ago and loved both it and the park. After spending the last several days in the car on the road, our plan was to relax for a while in one spot and do some hiking. Thanks to heavy rain along the way, we had to drive slowly and checked in late.

road fishing

We found a few locals were actually fishing for barramundi on the flooded road to Nourlangie.

At breakfast the next morning, we found out that the rivers around us were beginning to flood and several roads were closed. After talking to the lodge staff, we made our plans and drove to Nourlangie to see the Aboriginal rock paintings and hike there. But when we got out to the parking lot, we were greeted by a park ranger who told us that the park and our lodge were being evacuated due to rising flood waters. On top of this, a cyclone was forming over Darwin.

All of this left me rather nervous. Being the adventure-loving type of guy he is, Robert was happy. So we took a quick hike to see the paintings. But as soon as we got up on the ridge to check out the view, rain bucketed down on us. Back to the car we went and then to the lodge to pack up.

Our relaxing time in Kakadu was limited to one night at the park. Now we will see if we are able to fly out of Darwin on Thursday. We heard that schools are closed there today. Oh well, it’s the wet season after all!
