Europe is still grounded

Iceland's Blue Lagoon

The good aspect of all the geothermal activity of Iceland: enjoying the spa at the Blue Lagoon in August 2007.

The day is sunny and beautiful and it makes no sense that there is still travel chaos across Europe. And it does not look like things are going to get any better in the coming week. I think it’s a wonderful reminder of the power of nature, but Robert and I are together so that makes it easier for me to think that. I know many of my friends are separated from their families or have had their plans canceled and I truly feel for them. My friend Maria is stuck in Milan and trying to figure out how to get home to Dublin. In looking at her options, she figures it will take her 3 days to get home to her husband.

Meanwhile, Annelie and Jaakko are waiting things out in Lake Como. OthersĀ  in their party opted to come home and are traveling five hours by bus, three hours by train and then another 17 hours on a bus, only to be stuck in traffic to get through the Alps. Annelie did not want to test out that travel endurance option with her five-month old baby, but she may have to.

Our friend Sean was supposed to be in Stockholm on business, but is still at home in California. Tracy and Dag were supposed to leave Stockholm on Friday for her birthday celebration in London. Of course, they are still here. And there are so many other stories just like these. A reader of my blog in South Carolina is supposed to move here next week with her family. Now that’s a lot of stress to add on to an already stressful relocation. I wish her luck as well.

And to end on a lighter note: the joke going around about the ordeal is: Iceland, we said we wanted cash, not ash.
