Påsk or easter flowers in Sweden on Lake Målaren

Branches decorated with feathers are a traditional Easter or Påsk decoration in Sweden. The bunch here is on a jetty near Nici and Roger's house. Notice that Lake Mälaren is still frozen. Photo by Robert Corkery.

With just returning after a long holiday, Robert and I have had a low-key Easter celebration. Last night, Nici and Roger had us over for an Easter dinner of grilled lamb chops, roasted potatoes and vegetables. It was our first Swedish BBQ of the year and it was a great kickoff. Swedish style, we started with three types of herring together with knäckebröd and snaps. (My favorite is always the herring in the senap or mustard sauce.) Roger was even good enough to indulge us non-Swedes by singing a drinking song.

As the sun is shining brightly today, Robert and I went on our first bike ride of the year. As the temperature is only 8C, there is still a good amount of snow in the shadows. Even so, it was good to be out. We stopped at Mellqvist for fika outside. Although the streets are quiet, the cafe was packed with sun seekers. It’s great to see the city coming back to life after the long winter.

Now we are roasting a turkey for our own Easter dinner. We already ate our chocolate rabbits, so it will have to be Marzipan eggs for dessert.
