Day trip from Venice: a perfect afternoon in Burano

August 29, 2013

in Italy,Venice

Burano, Italy The houses in Burano are beautifully vibrant. Burano Italy When you add in canals and bridges, you get a town that is completely charming.

If ever there was a town that could be called postcard perfect, it’s Burano. Located in the Venetian lagoon just a 40-minute boat ride from Venice, Burano is jam-packed with charm. And it’s all to do with the houses. Each house seems to do outdo the next in terms of brightness in sheer bravery in color. A lemon yellow house is next door to forest green. Bright peach by royal blue. Tangerine next to melon next to lime.

The effect is brilliant. But then combine these charmingly painted houses with canals. And yes, the photo opportunities are endless, even in the middle of the day on a hot summer afternoon.

Since the 16th century, Burano has also been known for making lace lace-making. But what I loved were the houses.

Burano Italy I liked the little extra artistic flair that was added to the blue house. Burano Italy And this color combo of bright pink with forest green was magnificent. Burano Italy When I saw the window boxes on this house, I wanted to live here. Burano Italy And this would be a bit more local color.

I’ve heard a few stories about the origin of all the colors, including that local fishermen painted their houses so they could see them from long distances when they were out fishing. And I also heard that when you paint your Burano house, you must submit a request to the government, who will then look at the colors allowed for that lot.

It all sounds likely to me, but am not sure of the real truth. What I can say is that anywhere I looked in Burano, I found a lot of photo opps. I added a few pics of my favorite houses here.

Burano Italy Curtains covered the doors in windows from the midday heat. Burano Italy Robert poses canalside. Burano Italy I also liked this combination of tangerine and melon.
