I am afraid that I have once again been Swedified. In honor of Fat Tuesday yesterday, I ate a semla. Actually, I split one with Robert.  And much to my great surprise, I liked it.

You see, in my five years here, I have never liked this popular Swedish specialty, mostly due to the cardamon, but also because of all the cream piled into the middle. In fact, I have often mocked the semlar as looking like a cream-stuffed hamburger (see yesterday’s post: Fat Tuesday in Sweden).

But the one I ate yesterday had very little of the cardamon in it and not as big of a mound of whipped cream, but instead much more of the marzipan, which I actually do like. So this semlor – from Konditori Eclair on Hornsgatan – was palatable to me. So much so that I am thinking that I might need another one today. Now I am worried that I have lived here too long.

You should definitely try one, but we may have to split it. But given your love of the Princess Torte, this sweet stuff should not be a problem for you…
