Selling out the holidays in Stockholm

October 16, 2009

in Stockholm,Travels

It’s happening already. Even here in Sweden – where I typically find that things are not quite so commercial as the US – Christmas is starting to appear. Not the holiday itself mind you, but rather the marketing of it. In the subways and newspapers and even on the backs of taxis, holiday ads are popping up. Julbords (Christmas smorgasbords), Christmas concerts and even Christmas cruises are advertised everywhere I look.

I get it that these events all mean big business, but it is not even Halloween yet. Can’t we wait to see this stuff until sometime in November? I swear that the big holiday ad extravaganza did not start until after Thanksgiving when I was a kid. But I guess that was a long time ago?

Agree with you, Sandra. Same here in the UK and in Germany. Never used to be so early when I was young, either. Even spotted the first Xmas-themed chocolates (the usual big brands, just with a more seasonal packaging!) in September. It’s driving me nuts!

I love the pre-Xmas season, but not really before 1st December. Shame to see another country, Sweden, going down the same commercialisation route. 🙁

Honestly? I believe it’s because there’s no Halloween to put in between. Over there, they don’t have to wait to be rid of Halloween and Thanksgiving decorations before there’s room for Christmas.
