Chickens in the city

I saw two chickens walking down the sidewalk in the center of town at lunch today. In between them, a young woman wearing a leotard with camouflage tights and high heels walked, drinking from a bottle of champagne. In case you had not already guessed, the chickens weren’t real, but rather two people dressed in yellow chicken suits with feathers. (Where is my camera when I need it?)

This being Stockholm on Birger Jarlsgatan and it being the eve of the pagan Valborg celebration, no one besides me even seemed to give the chickens a second glance. This is a party day and tonight, bonfires will be lit all over Sweden to signify the end of winter. And to celebrate the arrival of spring, lots of drinking is already occurring and spring songs will be sung. To students, Walpurgis means that graduation is near and they don their boat captain studenten graduation hats to wear to the fires. So I guess the chickens all just seemed par for the course on Valborgsmässoafton.
