Surprise holiday in Venice

August 16, 2013

in Italy,Travels

The view of the Grand Canal last night. The view of the Grand Canal last night.

Gondoliers are singing outside my window. I can see the Grand Canal from my terrace. And it’s my birthday. You know those times in life where you think that things could not get much better than this? Well, today is one of them.

And it was all a surprise.

On Sunday, Robert said, “Where would you most like to go on your birthday?”

My response was rather lengthy, and tempered by my thinking that my suggestion should be somewhere more local rather than farther afield. So I mentioned Cornwall, Paris, Segovia, Riga, and many, many more options. Before I could go on, though, Robert stopped me.

“Haven’t you been mentioning that you want to go to Italy again about every other day lately?

Yes.

“And where have you not been in Italy that you’ve always wanted to go?”

Venice! I yelled. Are we going to Venice?

We were. And now we are here in the city of canals and gondoliers and tourists. And did I mention it’s my birthday? This is looking to be the best birthday ever!
