Care package from home: Thin Mints and more

The Girl Scout Cookie portion of my care package.

I don’t care how long you’ve been gone from home or how old you are, getting a care package rocks. Last week, I got a box from Mom that included Girl Scout Cookies, Listerine Mint Breath Strips and chocolate Easter eggs from Cincinnati favorite Graeter’s. I was deliriously, insanely happy with my haul and I immediately and without hesitation opened the package of Thin Mints, my personal, all-time favorite Girl Scout Cookie.

Yum. That taste brings me straight back to being a kid again. And while other childhood favorites such as Twinkies and Hostess Cupcakes have been a HUGE disappointment when I tried them as an adult, the Thin Mints still hold up.

By the way, while I was in Australia I discovered a very close equal to the Thin Mint: Arnott’s Mint Slice biscuits. These cookies are fatter than a Thin Mint, but they are really good. After trying one, I complained to Robert: “Why didn’t you tell me about these years ago?” I brought some back to Sweden and intended to do a taste test comparison with the Thin Mints. Unfortunately, the Mint Slice cookies were long gone before the Thin Mints ever arrived. Oh well.

Yesterday, I shared the Girl Scout Cookies with Christian, a Swedish friend. When I asked if he had ever had one, his reply was, “No, but I’ve heard of them. They are famous.”

Famous how, I asked curiously.

“From the Friends episode where Ross breaks the Girl Scout’s leg and has to sell cookies for her.”

It took me a minute to make the connection and realize what he was talking about, but then I couldn’t help but laugh. It was just another classic case of American culture being shared with the world via TV.

There is just something about a Girl Scout cookie! I fully agree!
