Big fat American stereotypes

which way to the buffet

Be an American: buy a fat suit and head to the buffet. Could there be any worse stereotype of my homeland?

While I was in a costume store here in Stockholm last week, I saw a big display for a do-it-yourself Hawaiian party. There was a fake tiki hut, leis, coconut glasses and all sorts of supplies to create your own luau. But the icing on the cake was the tacky tourist fat suit that was with the set-up. As an American, I guess I should have been offended. Instead, I laughed and took a photo. I’ve taken on so many  battles over “why are Americans so.. (loud, fat, religious, etc)” in my time in Sweden. Sometimes you have to roll with the punches.

I wonder if different countries have different stereotypes in their minds when they think of Americans? That’s isn’t my idea of how Americans are, and I don’t think I have ever heard it mentioned here.

But then this country has a weight problem too.

Great question Jane. So what are your American stereotypes?

It depends on the area from which they come, too varied to mention really. The majority I have met over here and in and around Chicago, where I stayed for a while, are courteous, hospitable, charitable – and appalling drivers! Oh, and always on the lookout for a bargain – even wealthy american friends would be hunting through the local papers for coupons, for stores that were already half the price of those in the UK!

I live in an area that is full of americans, many come over with the air force and then stay on because they like it here. Even one of my supermarket delivery men is american. One of our local TV presenters is, too.

However, I do realise that overall it is impossible to stereotype such a huge nation, each area should have its own sterotypes.
