Autumn color and nostalgia

in Cincinnati: my hometown,Stockholm

The trees on Långholmen are beginning to show their autumn colors. Photos by Robert Corkery.

Reds, yellows, oranges and still lots of greens. The trees are a patchwork of color in Stockholm right now and it’s quite gorgeous. But something is missing for me. This time of year always makes me feel nostalgic for Cincinnati and a lifetime of autumn memories – college football games and tailgating, picking apples, going to the pumpkin patch, Halloween parties and trick or treat. While I know I can go apple picking and perhaps find a pumpkin patch, college football and trick or treat are not part of the autumn here.

In fact, while I have plenty of summer, spring and Christmas favorites here, I realized I have not developed any particular Swedish autumn traditions. I know that mushroom picking is a big favorite and I am sure that I could find a host of other seasonal activities if I ventured out of the city. I think it may be time to see what I can discover.
