Around Tassie

Hobart harbour

The harbor at Hobart.

One of the many things that I enjoy about Australians is their liberal use of colloquial names – Tasmania is typically called Tassie, for instance. So I feel compelled to use the term to talk about some of the highlights of Hobart.

Royal Tasmanian Botanic Gardens

A Norfolk pine in the Royal Tasmanian Botanic Gardens.

Although I’ve been to Tassie before, we mostly spent our time hiking around Cradle Mountain. So on this trip, I was happy to check out Hobart. This town has a laid-back vibe and is also pretty. I love the waterfront vista combined with Mt. Wellington and the hills around it. This is a small capital city – only just over 200,000 live here – and it’s easy to walk around. Tasmania is an island state of Australia and was founded as a penal colony in 1803. Now it is a busy seaport and serves as the base for expeditions to Antarctica. And it is also internationally famous for the Sydney to Hobart yacht race which starts the day after Christmas every year.

Monet bridge

If the bridge was green, you might think you were in Monet's garden instead of the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens.

It looks wonderful! So glad you’re having a great time.
When do you head to mainland Oz?

My immediate reaction exactly! (that it looks like Monet’s garden).

Thanks Sharon and Marilyn. I came back to the mainland on Friday evening.
