Apartment hunting in Stockholm

April 26, 2010

in Stockholm,Travels

Our apartment building is being sold. And as we are renters with a second-hand lease and thus have virtually no rights, we have been told that we need to move. Soon.

We love our place. We love our view. And I love my office here and don’t want to interrupt my writing flow. Thus I am finding it hard to give up our home, especially when I see what is available out there. Rentals are few and tend to not be inspiring. Then that leaves buying a place. We are considering it, but also resisting. I am not sure that I want that long term of a commitment to Stockholm. Plus, the housing market is nuts in Stockholm just now and prices are crazy expensive in the city.

So on this sunny Stockholm Monday, I am stressed. Anybody know of a good apartment for sale or rent?

Oh no. That’s so sad. Hopefully it will take a long time to sell. You have such a great place. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for a good solution for you.

Thanks so much James. Actually, the sale is underway. But I am still hoping for a solution!

Wow. I think that might be just a bit too small for us Roger!

and maybe a bit to expensive I guess 🙂 but maybe you can do some kind of percentage deal on your book 🙂

Oh, it’s only a bit too expensive…Yikes! OK, it’s way too expensive. But maybe you would like to buy it for us?

Even I know apartments are hard to come by in Stockholm. Good luck!

Thanks Antropologa! We will definitely need the luck. Glad to hear you arrived safely.

If either of you has an employer who would sign a contract to guarantee your rent if you default, you might want to look to the business side of BostadDirekt.com. My postdoc found that many more sublets (legal) were available through that route than through the private section. It’s a hefty fee (8900 kr), but they guarantee you another apartment if something happens with the place you take.

Hi Elizabeth,
Thanks for your suggestion–we need all the help we can get at this point! We actually are signed up with Bostad Direkt and are hoping they will find something for us.
Best,
