car dining

Car dining at its finest.

I haven’t been around much on the blog lately. I’ve traveled from one side of  the world to the other. Mourned the loss of my father-in-law and our apartment. Gotten over jet lag. And for the past few days, I’ve been spending time back in the US with family and friends. That’s been a good thing.

I felt like I drove into 1959 yesterday. We went to  The Jug, a classic American drive-in diner where you pull into a parking place, a car hop takes your order and then brings it to you on a tray that attaches to your window – all so you can eat without ever leaving your car. While I got to experience car side service a handful of times as a kid, I was really more a part of the drive-thru generation. Places like The Jug were more a part of my parent’s generation – one that was forever immortalized in American Grafffiti.

In keeping with the ’50s drive-up style, I felt I had to have a root beer float – root beer poured over vanilla ice cream. It made me feel like a kid, but I had to have help from my niece and nephew to finish it. The burgers, fries and onion rings were also excellent, by the way. And if you’re up for experiencing a fun bit of nostalgia, The Jug is located just north of Cincinnati in Middletown, Ohio.
