Polar trek

Sunrise in the forest looking toward the Lule river. Photo by Robert Corkery.

We’re at the Arctic Circle. Well, actually, we’re just south of it in a tiny town called Harads which is one hour drive north of Luleå. It’s cold, snowy and dark and it feels like we are a million miles away from Stockholm. It’s immensely quiet. Peaceful and beautiful.

Thanks to the full moon, we were able to take a walk in the forest at midnight last night. Although we did not see any animals, we periodically heard loud thumps and rustling which we figured had to be moose. And in the morning, animal tracks were everywhere: deer, hare and small tiny lines of prints which we guessed were mice. The cold is biting, but there’s a frosty layer of snow on the trees that makes it all so magical looking that it’s OK.

Stunning!

Sounds like an interesting trip. I love the snow on the trees now, too.

Antroploga,
It was interesting and gorgeous too. Just dark. And cold. There’s no snow on the trees here in Stockholm at the moment, but it is snowing.
