Christmas in Stockholm: Stars & candles in the windows

December 6, 2013

in Christmas in Stockholm,Living in Sweden

Stockholm Christmas stars like these in the window of department store NK are a typical part of holiday decorating in Sweden.

I haven’t had the chance to pull my Christmas decorations out of the basement storage yet and even though it’s still early in December, I am starting to feel like a slacker. All around Stockholm, the Christmas stars and advent candles are in the windows. As I look out my living room windows, I can see more than a dozen different options in the apartments across the street. I love the cozy glow the lights bring to the dark days of winter here.

How do you survive without the pretty advent lights? It’s the only thing that keeps me remotely sane at this dark time of the year. In the winter darkness, the window displays look beautiful and I will be loving walking around town in the coming weeks and seeing all of the windows decorated for Christmas.

I generally start to pester my Swede to put up the Christmas lights about mid-November when the big Christmas pageant in my hometown (Adelaide) is on. I feel I need a need a bit of whimsy and sparkle in my life, even though he makes me wait until the first of Advent. Then I go crazy….

Marie, We have all the holiday lights up now–both in the window and on a mini Christmas tree, so it feels good. Like you, I have to have those lights!
Do you like in Adelaide now or Sweden? By the way, I am married to an Aussie. Thanks for the comments.
