A Thanksgiving in Sweden

I felt rather inexplicably out of sorts yesterday. Thanksgiving is one of the bigger holidays in the US and the only one where you are guaranteed a four-day weekend. Of course, it is not celebrated here in Sweden. I felt like I had not been invited to the party, but not in a “poor me” kind of way, but rather in a “something is missing” kind of way.

After five years of living abroad, I still miss the tradition and celebrating with family and friends in the US. I miss the turkey and stuffing, running the annual turkey trot in Cincinnati, the day after Thanksgiving shopping madness, the Thanksgiving parades and even the football (but only just a little.) Luckily, I will get to have a full-on turkey dinner at my friend MB’s tomorrow and I am looking forward to it. But I still miss my American holiday.

After almost 30 years in Sweden, Thanksgiving is the holiday that I miss most and makes me feel most homesick. There is just no substitution for the parades, the football games and the shopping frenzy the day after. But we do celebrate Thanksgiving each year – with wonderful friends and turkey dinner with all the trimmings. It’s not the same, but we have made our own tradition. Thanksgiving is all about giving thanks afterall!
