A taste of France

in Eating out in Stockholm,Stockholm,Stockholm's food

I had lunch at Cafe Saturnus the other day with my friend Zanne. I hadn’t been there in a while, so I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. It’s a cozy cafe – according to their web site, they seat 60 inside and 15 out – and it makes you feel like you’ve been transported to France when you walk in the door. Le Monde sits on the glass and cutlery table next to the International Herald Tribune and the local Swedish papers. The brightly papered and painted walls, patterned tile floor and bistro chairs add to the look.

At Saturnus, the salads and sandwiches are always good. I had a surprisingly tasty chicken and spinach salad. And of course they serve up a decent croque monsieur. But it’s the pastries that leave you drooling. They are in front of you on the counter as you order and they are gorgeous looking and thus irresistible. Plus, they taste good. You’ll find my personal favorite pain au chocolat, tarts, dense chocolate cakes. And the plate-sized kanelbullar or cinnamon buns have to be the biggest I’ve seen anywhere in town.

It’s worth stopping for a coffee and pastry if nothing else. Plus, the people watching is good. There’s always an interesting crowd – the usual moms with baby prams, well dressed Ostermalmians and lots of internationals as well. Find the address and other details here: saturnus.

I love Saturnus too! Those cinnamon buns are bigger than my head. And the coffee…..forgetaboutit!

Fine, your part of Sweden has all the decent restaurants, but I hear that my part of Sweden (Borås) has the cheapest clothes. So ha! (Trying to combat my jealousy.)

Antroploga,
You made me laugh out loud! We all take our pleasure where we can, right? And I have to say, there’s nothing cheap about Stockholm.
When are you coming to the big city to visit?
